LOK SWASTHYA SEWA COOPERATIVE

Registered in 1990, Lok Swasthya SEWA Cooperative is the first women-owned, women-run health cooperative in India with the aim of making basic health information and services accessible to women in the informal economy. It enables them to become self-reliant through affordable healthcare, thus reducing out of pocket expenditure and indebtedness.

Affordable and accessible health care is crucial for keeping informal women workers out of poverty. Today with a membership of 1400 women, Lok Swasthya SEWA Cooperative has its own Ayurveda production centre and two 24-hour medical stores in Ahmedabad, providing medicines at low cost and also information on
rational drug use.

Lok Swasthya has two holistic health centres in Ahmedabad, where traditional Ayurvedic healing is offered.

24x7 Low-Cost Drug Stores

Our two low-cost pharmacies in Ahmedabad were set up in x year to make low-cost medicines accessible to informal women-workers, as their hard-earned income was being spent on medicines. Over the years the pharmacies have supported x number of women in the informal economy.

Community Health Services

Lok Swasthya’s community-based primary health care services are led by informal women workers who are trained to provide health information and education. Our health workers fill in the gaps in the existing public health services. Our approach to primary health care is a comprehensive one, right from creating awareness and health education to building linkages to primary healthcare services and increasing access to quality medical facilities.

At the community level, our health services are spearheaded by a team of trained community health workers who are (arogya sevikas) also arogya sakhis who are frontline women leaders and community workers.
